24 History Memes They Didn't Show You In School

The pilgrims weren't actually the best bunch, but that doesn't mean we can't change the meaning of the holiday they helped create and celebrate it with gusto.

The first Thanksgiving was held in November of 1621, a casual 402 years ago, but miraculously it's a tradition that continues to this day. It was held to celebrate a successful first harvest in the new world for the pilgrims and was hosted by 53 surviving members of the Mayflower, in conjunction with 90 Native American Wampanoag people. While the event itself was a nice peaceful interaction between the groups, we might as well ignore what would eventually transpire if we want to feel good about ourselves while stuffing our faces with turkey this year. In actuality, they didn't even eat any turkey at the 1621 party.

Outside of July 4th, it's hard to imagine a major American holiday with a more historical origin. But with that said, when it comes to making history memes, the people of the internet tend to ignore it and focus on their favorite topics like World War II, the Romans, and ridiculously niche bits only the buffs know about. Still, on this historical holiday, remember the pilgrims, and the Wampanoag people they would eventually decimate while checking out these 24 unrelated history memes this Thanksgiving.
